Also, although I wanted 1 Gbps, it probably is overkill for you so you may be able to get 140 Mbps for really cheap if you talk with them. They are customers too so they understand how you feel and will try their best to give you the best deal they can find. Obviously, be reasonable because you will have much better luck with getting a great deal. Activation fee was waived as well.īasically, talk to them and work out with them a good deal. So after talking to them, they were able to give me a great deal that was significantly cheaper than Comcast and price locked for 3 years. I appreciate that but I really wanted that 1 Gbps.

I then proceeded to cancel it in which they were offering me 40 Mbps/10 Mbps down for FREE for one year. However, I messed up and wasn't clear that I wanted 1 Gbps up and down so the the rep left before I could get a great deal for 1 Gbps. A couple days later, they sent someone to my house to offer me an even better deal. But then decided to cancel because I was hesitating. So after my first chat, I had the deal on pending order. I was simply trying to figure out whether it was worth changing ISP. Once again, remember to save your chat.Ībout what I talked above, initially I wasn't trying to haggle. If you are not exactly satisfied, chat them up again (will most likely get a different person) and see if they can give you a better deal. After you finished chatting with them, if you are satisfied, then good. Think about whether the deal they offer you while talking to them is good enough. 2nd, SAVE YOUR CHAT HISTORY (in their chat window, there is a "+" symbol that you can click and then forward your chat history to your email).

Go strictly for their internet deals instead. Generally they will suggest you not to bundle too but I'm just letting you know ahead. If you are already their customer (via their home line service), DON'T go for their package as you won't get any good deals.

Now if you do find out you have fiber in your area, a couple things first. You can then specifically give them your address and ask if your area has fiber or will have fiber in the near future. Go to that site and if it's during their business hour, you can see a little Chat link at the very top next to their Call Us link. You could call them but I felt like I had better luck using their live chat. Anyway, it's a good first indicator but if you really want to make sure whether your area has it or not, I would recommend you to actually Chat them up. It seems fiber network for my area went live that morning. I then did the address search thing again and then 1 Gbps now showed up. They told me they don't serve my area and that CenturyLink does. After my second disappointed talk with Comcast a couple days later, I then tried looking at Frontier (formerly Verizon FiOS). I first tired CenturyLink and used their address search thing but at that time, it only showed my top speed as 40 Mbps (not 140 Mbps). After my first disappointed talk with Comcast's CSR, I started looking around for alternatives. So yes, I used the CentruyLink address search thing. Any other ideas or possible reasons why my upload speed is so much faster than my download speeds? And I'm testing this close to 3am in the morning too so there should not be many users (though they did advertise this as a FTTH connection). I have also updated to the most recent settings of Merlin and followed the guide here especially the part regarding resetting the router. I tried various settings and resetting my router as well and got similar results. The results: Oddly enough, my upload speed is much much faster than my download speed. Once I installed fiber, the first thing I did was test my speed.

So a few weeks later, I got fiber! I opted to use my own router (Asus RT-N66U) which I had Merlin installed on. It was great timing too since on the day it went live, it was also the same day I was trying to get Comcast to lower my price (unsuccessfully as always). So after paying over $90 for Comcast for so many years with no other reasonable option, I jumped for joy when CenturyLink's fiber network went live in my area in Portland.
